29 Oct Rabbi Hillel Skolnik’s Torah Spark for Parashat Vayeira 5776
This Shabbat we read from Parashat Vayeira in which Abraham and Sarah find out the exciting news that they will soon welcome a child into their lives. While this news might not sound like such a big deal, when you consider how advanced in years both Abraham and Sarah were, and how they had been living under the assumption that they would have no children together, this development came as a tremendous surprise. So much so, that Sarah’s reaction was to laugh which is where Yitzchak gets his name. But ultimately, their reaction is one of tremendous happiness and celebration which is exactly how we would expect them to react. Many, if not all of us have known couples who yearned for a child yet none arrived. And in the situations when one did eventually come, expressions of emotion were abounding and included smiles, laughter and many tears of joy. It is a moving moment in the Torah because we are privy to happy emotions that we don’t often see and it reminds us to savor those happy moments, especially those that involve the birth of a child.
