12 Feb Rabbi Hillel Skolnik’s Torah Spark for Parashat T’rumah
This Shabbat we read from Parashat T’rumah in which the Israelites are requested to donate to what is essentially the very first “building fund” in the history of the Jewish people, a fund that was created for building the mishkan, the tabernacle. While participation in this fundraising effort was understood to be universal throughout the people, the amount each person gave was up to every individual. People gave according to what their heart desired and, of course, according to their ability. And no matter what they donated, their ability to worship at the Tabernacle did not change, their sense of ownership of the spiritual space neither rose nor diminished, and their feeling of participation never wavered. It created for all of us a beautiful model of what it means to build something together – valuing all contributions, big or small, is at the heart of the matter and makes a spiritual space all the more special and sacred.
