13 Apr Rabbi Hillel Skolnik’s Torah Spark for M’tzora/Shabbat HaGadol
This Shabbat we read from Parashat M’tzora as well as mark Shabbat HaGadol, the Shabbat immediately preceding Passover. Although Shabbat HaGadol has no special maftir aliyah, it does have its own special haftarah, and is known in Jewish history as one of two shabbatot during the year when the rabbi would traditionally give a sermon. The second time was on Shabbat Shuva, the Shabbat between Rosh HaShannah and Yom Kippur when the rabbi would speak about t’shuvah, repentance. On Shabbat HaGadol, the rabbi would speak about Passover and the rules associated with cleaning out the chametz, the leaven, from our homes. In that light, anyone who is interested to learn more is invited to join us over Shabbat, at our Davka Decaf and Dibbur this coming Tuesday morning at 9:15 am at Panera on Sand Lake Road, or to peruse our Passover page on the SOJC website – www.sojc.org/passover.
