07 Apr Rabbi Hillel Skolnik’s Torah Spark for Parshat Tazria/Shabbat Rosh Chodesh/Shabbat HaChodesh
For the second time in the year 5776, we have the unusual occurrence of removing three Torahs from the ark as this Shabbat we read from our weekly Torah portion, Parashat Tazria, the special reading for Rosh Chodesh (the new month) followed by the special reading for Shabbat Hachodesh, the fourth and final special Shabbat before Passover. Those of you who have been following along with these sparks will recall that it was on the Shabbat of Chanukah earlier this year, which also coincided with Rosh Chodesh, that we took out three Torahs previously. The month that begins this Shabbat is the month of Nissan, the month in which Passover takes place which is, as the Torah calls it, “Rosh Chodashim”, the head of all the months. It was called this because the month of Nissan is the month of the liberation of the Israelite people from their bondage. We hope and pray that as we rejoice in the freeing of our ancestors from slavery that we too may be freed from whatever enslaves us in our own lives.
Shabbat Shalom and Chodesh Tov,
Rabbi Hillel Skolnik
