Rabbi Hillel Skolnik’s Torah Spark for Chukat 5776

Rabbi Hillel Skolnik’s Torah Spark for Chukat 5776

This Shabbat we read from Parashat Chukat which describes some of the worst moments of Moshe’s life.  Within one Torah portion, Moshe is punished with not being allowed to enter into the Promised Land for hitting to a rock as opposed to speaking to it and also suffers the loss of his brother Aaron, whose life also comes to an end in the desert because of the episode with the rock.  Yet even from these moments it doesn’t affect how we view Moshe, doesn’t change the incredible accomplishments he achieved throughout his life.  It forces us to remember that we all suffer difficult and dark times in our own lives, but we do our best to keep on living even as we mourn.  It is a lesson our community has learned all too well this summer, but one that should inform how we continue to live our lives.

Shabbat Shalom,

Rabbi Hillel Skolnik
