29 Dec Rabbi Hillel Skolnik’s Torah Spark for Mikeitz 5777
This Shabbat we read from Parashat Mikeitz and also mark Shabbat Chanukah, the Shabbat that falls during Chanukah. Of course because Chanukah is eight days long, on some years there are actually two nights of Chanukah, but this year, the calendar brings us only one. On Shabbat Chanukah, or in years when there are two on the first of the two, we read a special haftarah from the book of Zechariah which reminds us “Not by might, nor by power, but by My spirit – said the Lord of Hosts” (Zecharia 4:6 NJPS) which is to say that we can do our best to affect events and to make change, but ultimately, is not by our own might or what we perceive as our own power, but by the spirit of God can we bring change to this world.
Shabbat Shalom and Chag Urim Sameach
