Rabbi Hillel Skolnik’s Torah Spark for Parashat Vayigash 5777

This Shabbat we read from Parashat Vayigash in which Joseph finally reveals his true identity to his brothers.  Truth be told this reconciliation could have taken place earlier on in this saga. It is Joseph who decides to put it off, challenging his brothers and testing them in ways that might seem, and in many ways are, unfair.  What he seems to be waiting for, however, he finds in Judah who steps forward to beg for the freedom of Benjamin who is there by the demand of Joseph and has now been accused of stealing a silver goblet (which Joseph planted in Benjamin’s pack). Judah’s action shows Joseph enough to know that they are not the same bunch who sold him down the river all those years ago. People can change with time when given the opportunity.  Not only do we all deserve the chance to change but we should afford that chance to others, even if it is done more kindly than Joseph to his brothers.

Shabbat Shalom,
