Rabbi Hillel Skolnik’s Torah Spark for Parashat Ki Tissa – Shabbat Parah 5777

This Shabbat we read from Parashat Ki Tissa in which we find the story of the sin of the Golden Calf. As I read through this story every year, I always find myself truly impressed with the way Moshe stands up for the people of Israel in the face of God’s wrath. Moshe even issues what amounted to an ultimatum to God saying, “If You are going to destroy the entire people for this sin, then wipe my name out of your book as well.” It must have taken an unspeakable amount of courage for Moshe to make such a statement, but at the end of the day he recognized that if he didn’t stand up for them, no one would. What we should learn from this moment is that we all share the responsibility to stand up in defense of those who cannot defend themselves. It is not always easy, but if we don’t do it then no one will.

Shabbat Shalom,
