Rabbi Hillel Skolnik’s Torah Spark for Sh’mini 5777

Rabbi Hillel Skolnik’s Torah Spark for Sh’mini 5777

This Shabbat we read from Parashat Sh’mini in which Aaron and his sons officially take on the mantle of the priesthood. Until this point they had been “priests-in-training” but Moshe had been the acting priest. However, as of this parasha, Aaron and his sons are on the job. This fresh start for the Israelites often times coincides nicely (as it does this year) with the fresh start that we all have after Passover. The Jewish year often feels like it has two halves – the first half being from Rosh HaShannah until Passover and the second being from Passover until the New Year. Just as Aaron taking on his duties as the High Priest offered a new beginning to the Israelites, we too have a new beginning in our spiritual lives as the second half of the Jewish year begins. Hopefully, our start goes more smoothly than Aaron’s does in the rest of this week’s Torah portion….

Shabbat Shalom,

Rabbi Hillel SKolnik
