16 Feb Rabbi Hillel Skolnik’s Torah Spark for Parashat T’rumah 5778 – Weekend of February 16-17, 2018
This Shabbat we read from Parashat T’rumah which begins to lay out the details of exactly – and I do mean exactly – how to build the mishkan, the tabernacle. This mishkan, a portable sanctuary that the Israelites will carry with them through the desert, will serve as their place of worship and the access point to God. But before it can be built, the materials for its construction must be gathered. Just like we do today, Moshe turned to his community and solicited donations of materials and money to build the mishkan. And incredibly, the Israelites, a newly free people, gave generously and willingly knowing, as we do today, that it was the responsibility of the community to provide the materials needed to build a sanctuary. In the coming months and years, let us all follow the example set forth by our ancestors by giving what we can to our community and taking the responsibility upon ourselves to keep our sanctuary strong.
