Special Blessing for Children for Erev Yom Kippur!

We bless our children every Friday night as we bring in Shabbat. Additionally, there is a beautiful custom to bestow a special blessing on our children on Erev Yom Kippur.

An excellent time to give this blessing is right before coming to Kol Nidre services.

The blessing begins as it does for Friday night:

For a boy:
May G-d make you like Ephraim and Menashe.

For a girl:
May G-d make you like Sarah, Rebecca, Rachel, and Leah.

For both:
May Hashem bless and protect you.
May the light of Hashem’s face shine upon you.
May Hashem look favorably on you, and grant you peace.

Then the special blessing for Erev Yom Kippur continues for both boys and girls as follows:
May G-d place His love in your heart.

May you be aware of what G-d wants you to do and may you live with honesty and integrity.

May you want to learn Torah and perform Mitzvot.

May your eyes look for truth, your mouth speak wisely, and your heart be filled with wonder and inspiration.

May your hands perform Mitzvot and may your feet run to do the right thing.

May G-d let you make an honest and comfortable living so that you will not have to take gifts and charity from other people. In this way, you will be able to serve G-d properly, learning Torah and performing Mitzvot.

And may you be written and sealed for a good, long life, together with all the righteous people of Israel.
